One of my favourite stores in one of my favourite towns.
Brian and Kelly (owners) are very friendly and knowledgeable. We’ve come to them with a vague description of a bird and they pointed us in the right directions – google. Well okay, more accurately a name to put IN to google to positively identify the bird they thought it was. They were right, belted kingfisher.
The store itself has a great assortment of feeders but the best part is it’s all high quality stuff, built to last. We got tired of replacing the box-store plastic stuff that would get wrecked in a year or two. They pointed us towards an excellent nyger feeder and explained why black sunflower seed feeders made of plastic don’t last. I’ll leave it up to you to contact them and ask why that is.
They also sold us a couple of humming bird feeders by Aspects that we really like. The difference is the perch is above the feeding holes, lets you get a better look at the bird, rather than half the hummingbird and the rest is feeder. ( http://www.forthebirdsnatureshop.ca/hummingbird-feeders/ )
For the Birds also has a great assortment of weather stations, wind gauges, tide clocks (ours is great!), binoculars, spotting scopes and weather vanes and a bunch more. Check out their web page ( link removed, store has closed ) and make up a very extensive list of things you want… I’m on page “all of it” right now. 😉
Mahone Bay is a beautiful place and For the Birds is a fantastic store. If you have even a passing interest in birding you won’t be disappointed by dropping by.
